The Basics of Brushing

Do you ever feel overwhelmed and under-educated when selecting a brush to create a perfect style? The key to achieving a polished finish, says Sam Villa, depends on three factors: hair type, technique and desired result. Make that four, because knowing what brush to pick up is equally important! Here’s a quick lesson:
Paddle brushes have soft cushions and ball-tipped nylon pins that glide through hair easily. They can be used on all hair types and lengths and are great for wrap drying, detangling, lifting and straightening.

Use round brushes on short- to medium-length wavy or curly hair. They curl, smooth, straighten and create volume.
Aluminum round brushes are good for fine hair; they conduct a lot of heat, providing stronger hold and control.

Use oval brushes for stretch drying. They create volume better than round brushes because of how the hair wraps around the brush at the base.

Classic finishing brushes—half-round brushes with nylon tips set on a rubber pad—are good for all hair types to create a smooth, shiny finish.

Styling brushes, made of boar and nylon bristles set in an oval air cushion, distribute natural oils down the hair shaft for a polished look.

Vent brushes are the lightest brush with widely-spaced pins that allow warm air circulation to the hair closest to the scalp. They’re great for creating texture and movement.

Easy Like Sunday Morning

Temps are dropping and hair is going to require extra TLC in the very near future. To give your hair  a winter-boost, consider  this easy deep conditioning treatment. It requires very little work on your end and the results are intensely satisfying.

Step 1: Shampoo hair with a SURFACE mild-to-moisturizing formula. Rinse thoroughly and squeeze out excess moisture.

Step 2: Choose a SURFACE conditioning formula suitable for your hair type. If locks are fine, you may want to consider SURFACE TRINITY CONDITIONER; if they’re coarse, try SURFACE BABA Hair Masque for Coarse Hair. Begin the application at the ends and work the formula up to the scalp with your fingers. Use a wide-tooth comb to distribute the product evenly.

Step 3: Cover hair with a plastic cap and apply heat for 20 minutes. This allows the hair cuticle to open and the conditioner to penetrate deeply into the strands. Let hair cool for about 5 minutes—the cuticles will close and retain all the moisture.

Step 4: Rinse with warm water until about 80% of the conditioner is gone. Switch to the coolest water you can stand and remove the remainder of the conditioner. This seals the hair shaft, keeping the conditioning ingredients inside where they can do the most good.

Step 5: Apply a leave-in conditioner like SURFACE TRINITY REPAIR TONIC and refrain from shampooing and conditioning for at least a day or two!

Color Me Happy

A good colorist can work wonders, but a part of getting the shade you want at the salon is preparing in advance.

Wash the night before. Your hair shouldn't be freshly shampooed--it will be too silky to section off properly for highlights. Plus, a little bit of oil protects the hair. (The night before getting any color t...hat requires bleach, use a deep conditioner to help minimize damage.)

However, I wouldn't go to the salon with dirty hair; the colorist won't be able to get an accurate sense of your base color.

Be yourself. Wear the makeup you normally wear; it will help your colorist know how the highlights will play off your usual look. I also suggest wearing your hair as you typically would--wavy, straight, or in a ponytail. You see fewer highlights in curly hair, so I would want to know that so I could add more color.

Bring pictures. It's always a good idea to bring photos of what you want (and even images of the color you don't want) to show the colorist how you define "copper" or "honey." And don't go more than five shades from your natural color unless you can come in every four to six weeks to maintain it.

Style Trends- 2010

2010 -2011 Straight hair styles Trends
The 2010 straight hair style trends have been present all over the runway this year as straight tresses are making a huge comeback. They create a simple, glamorous and occasion appropriate hair styles, making them perfect for every type of events.

The 2010 straight hair styles trends have focused on emphasizing the hair as well as the facial features. The cut of the straight hair styles can determine the type of straight hair styles you can achieve. You can go all the way sleek straight or you can opt for a more glam inspired look, by twisting the ends of your straight tresses.

One of the best things about straight hair is that it can be styled on all hair lengths emphasizing the hairs cut. Blunt cuts work beautifully with straight hair styles as the sharp, edgy look is emphasized by the hairs sleekness.

2010 curly hair style trends
If you go take a look at various hair styles for curly hair, you should find something interesting fairly quickly but you have to understand that not all curls are the same and some of them won`t look that good on you even if they do look good on someone else. Usually the thing is your facial structure which is essentially the shape of your face and it plays the main role in what your hair style looks like when it blends in with your face.
